Gift Certificates Redeemed in January
The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificate program has increased sales figures each year sinc
e its inception in 1995. The Chamber reported in January that the total 2007 sales figure of $449,875, an increase of $54,000 over 2006. GOACC just reconciled its books and is proud to say that $103,220 in gift certificates were redeemed this past January - that’s a jump from $92,350 in January 2007. GOACC reported that additional benefits of the gift certificate program will be further realized when the certificates are spent in 2008, generating local, county, and state sales tax. Although it is also difficult to measure, Chamber officials are certain that there are additional sales generated locally from the use of the certificates.
A tremendous growth in gift certificate sales and redemption over the past years made it necessary for GOACC to make some changes to accommodate this continued success. Community Bank’s sponsorship made it possible for the Chamber to upgrade and automate the program so that gift certificates can be deposited directly into the redeeming business’s account. Businesses don’t have to return them to the Chamber and wait for reimbursement.
The unique part of the Chamber gift certificate program is that the certificates can be redeemed at a wide variety of businesses that the recipient may choose. An example of the types of businesses participating include those which sell apparel, flowers, gifts, jewelry, retail outlets, automotive, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, hair salons, home and garden, services, etc.
What a great way to recognize your employees for their contributions within their respective job responsibilities and improve your community at the same time. It is also a great way to give those on your holiday list a nice gift and having your dollars support the local economy. GOACC instituted the Gift Certificate Program in 1995 and that year certificates totaling $9,000 were sold with 35 member businesses involved in the program. As of the end of December 2007, more than 240 member businesses were signed on for this year-round certificate program. The certificates are sold only at the GOACC Chamber office at 120 North Union Street, Olean, in increments of $5, $10, $20, $25, and $50 throughout the year.
