December 12, 2011 -- Woodland in the City (Woodland) and the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) have teamed up again and created the 2012 Woodland in the City Squirrel Calendar.  Last year, the calendar featured the local community in photos with the squirrels.  Woodland and GOACC looked for photos again this year.  The photos feature one of the Woodland Squirrels – a youngster dressed up like an elf and is with the Santa squirrel or a son dressed up like a knight and is with the Knight in Shining Armor squirrel!  Facts and figures on the squirrels including their unique coloring, eating habits, origin of name and even the date of National Squirrel Appreciation Day are listed. Also, trivia on famous squirrels and even the Rally Squirrel from St. Louis are included.  A map depicting locations of all squirrels is inside. The calendar, sold at the GOACC office, sells for $10.

Santa Claus Will Officially Open Santa’s Cottage

December 5, 2011-- Santa’s Back in Town!  Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Olean, Home Depot, and Duggan and Duggan General Contractors will host the ‘Visit with Santa’ at his cottage in Olean’s Lincoln Park.  Santa Claus will visit with the children from 6 - 8 PM on Wednesdays, December 7 and December 14.  A mailbox, created by families of the EvenStart program, was constructed and is placed by Santa’s Cottage in Lincoln Park.  Santa is encouraging all children to write a letter to Santa and place it in the mailbox.

Chamber Announces Parade Winners
November 25, 2011
Fifty-three units and more than 1,125 adults and children took part in the 26th Annual Santa Claus Lane Parade held Friday, November 25 in downtown Olean.  Judging for this season’s parade was done by Al Wager, National Grid Co.; Paula Snyder, Jamestown Community College; Max Bullers, Home Depot of Olean; and Lori Babcock of Microtel Inn of Olean.

Next Seminar up for the Chamber Six-Week Seminar Series

GOACC’s membership committee began hosting seminars every six weeks in September. Each seminar will feature a topic of concern to our membership. They will be held at the Chamber office at no cost for Chamber members.  Matt Kahm, GOACC Member Committee Chair stated, “Our members are looking to us for information – what better way than to bring them to the Chamber office and educate them.”  The seminar series began in September with the topic of What Can the Chamber Do For You, October with Facebook Strategies, and November was Running Your Business in a Cloud.  The next one is set for December. Right Down Santa Claus Lane...

Officials from Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce have registered fifty units for the upcoming Santa Claus Lane Parade on Friday, November 25 in which Santa and Mrs. Claus light thousands of lights in downtown Olean.  The ever-popular Parade is the official kick-off to the holiday season in the area.

Photos Needed for Annual Squirrel Calendar

Area residents and visitors are invited once again to send in their photos of the Woodland in the City Squirrels to be chosen and placed in the 2012 squirrel calendar.  The Woodland in the City (Woodland) committee and the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) are sponsoring the Photo Contest.

Last year, the calendar featured the local community in photos with the squirrels.  We are looking for photos again this year.  The photos should feature one of the Woodland Squirrels – maybe your youngster dressed up like an elf and is with the Santa squirrel or maybe your son dressed up like a knight and is with the Knight in Shining Armor squirrel.  We do ask that those in the photo DO NOT sit on the squirrel for the photos.  Photos can be dropped off at the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce office, Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, mail it to: Squirrel Photo Contest, c/o GOACC, 120 North Union, Olean, NY 14760, or email tourism@oleanny.com. Please make sure you include your name, address, and home phone number. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY 4:30 P.M. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21. 

In other squirrel news, GOACC has many squirrel items/memorabilia for sale.  A plush squirrel, a squirrel ornament, a squirrel dice game, the Woodland Squirrel booklet, and now the Woodland squirrel bookmarks are for sale ranging in price from $1 - $6.00.  Six of the Woodland in the City squirrels are featured in eight different bookmarks printed by Paper Factory in Olean.  The bookmarks are a $1 each, or six for $5.  For more information on the photo contest, please contact GOACC at (716) 372-4433.
