Companion Retriever Hunting Contest

The Companion Hunting Retriever Challenge (C.R.H.C.)
by Jim Beverly

An activity with the focus on the typical owner/handler of a retriever that is a family companion as well as a hunting partner.  Designed to encourage having fun and understanding exactly what you want of your retriever and not based on the traditional hunt test/field trial attitude.

PRIZES
Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, and third place for each level.  Also, a free drawing for all handlers for prizes after ribbons are awarded.

1.    No professional dog trainers allowed to handle dogs.
2.    Dogs currently holding any Hunt Test or Field Trial Titles are not eligible.  All other titles are acceptable.
3.    Retrievers or Retriever mix breeds only.
4.    Actual hunting scenarios for both field and water hunting when the venue permits both.
5.    Test will be set up and explained by Jim Beverly
6.    Scoring will take into consideration all phases of the hunt including the dog/handler relationship.
7.    Handlers must be at least 12 yrs old to participate and be willing to use their waterfowl calls and handle & fire popper loads in a 12 ga. Shotgun.  Primers or other means of producing the sound of the gun will be used depending on the venue.  There will be NO gunfire at the bird launch location.  A short goose or duck call will be blown to simulate an incoming bird or birds.
8.    There will be two levels.  Level 1 and 2.  Level one will consist of single retrieves in an actual goose and duck hunting scenario.  Level 2 will consist of more difficult scenarios, but again, real hunting situations.
9.    Judging will be done by Jim Beverly
10.  Each participant will be assigned a number in each level.  Score sheets will be given to a person chosen by the sponsoring organization or group to tabulate totals.
11.  Contest scenario will be shown prior to running but not until after everyone has registered.  Each handler must decide which level to enter based on just the information in #8.
12.   Registration fees (if any) and prizes for 1,2, & 3rd will be decided by sponsoring organization or group.
13.   Participants will be encouraged to treat the contest as though they were actually on a hunt.
14.    Dakota goose and duck decoys will be used.  Final Approach layout blinds and mutt hut will be used unless the handler does not use a layout blind or mutt hut.  ComoFlex Systems will be used for duck blind, bird boy concealment and added props where needed.  DTSystem bumpers and in some cases, bird launchers will be used.
15.   A DVD will be available for anyone wishing to purchase a copy of the contest.

"TRUST & OBEY" We ask this of our dogs, OUR LORD asks us to do the same.

This will be a fun event and scoring will be fair and not based on the same methods used in hunt tests or field trials.

ALL ABOUT JIM BEVERLY -- I worked with the pros as a teenager. In 1967, I started training for my own clients. My education is in Engineering & Marketing. In recent years, I have discontinued running dogs in hunt tests or other competitive venues. I now specialize in clinics, seminars and the Companion Hunting Retriever. The passion I have for educating the owner/handler for the real world of hunting, is greater than my desire for titles or passing tests based on expectations of anyone other than the individual hunter. My attitude toward the companion hunting dog is one that does not allow for failure or a recommendation to replace the animal. Regardless of what the pedigree shows or where the dog originated, the retriever CAN do what it was bred to do if the proper techniques are used for that particular personality and style of dog.

My focus at this point in my career is on performing clinics and seminars, in addition to producing an unedited, true to life training DVD. I will also be doing conferences for those interested in becoming a professional trainer and learning my techniques and style. It is no secret to everyone that knows me that I give all the credit for my special talent to GOD and wish to share it with anyone interested.
