Brackets, basketballs, backboards and bragging rights are all part of the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball tournament held this weekend in Olean August 19-21. The 3-day event, organized by the Olean High School Sports Booster and the Olean City School District Foundation, is open to players of all ages and experience levels who are computer-matched by age, height and experience so that all participants can be competitive. The event, first held in Lowell, Michigan in 1974, is a family festival with food and music along with the basketball competition. Olean General Hospital is proud to be 2011’s Gus Macker Tournament Sponsor.
The tournament will take place on Delaware Avenue and North Barry Streets in Olean, NY. The tournament, based on basketball played in driveways throughout the U.S., will include players who have no experience to those who have played college and semi-professional basketball. Depending on the number of teams placed in a specific division, players and the teams they’re on will be playing for first- and second- and third trophies. Also teams that finish last in their divisions could receive “Toilet bowl” trophies.
MORE THAN JUST BASKETBALL -- The Gus Macker is more than just basketball. VISIONS HOTEL FRIDAY FUNFEST--Olean Gus Macker has scheduled Friday, August 19 as a FunFest. The Sponsors Corporate Cup, presented by Sports Locker, is for all sponsors who would like to participate in a mini 3 on 3 basketball tourney. The players on your team must be actual employees (or spouse), and consist of at least 2 females. Registration begins at 5:30 PM, games starts at 6 PM. The Enchanted Mountain Roller Derby team will take on staff from the Gus Macker National team in an exhibition game Friday. Last year’s corporate sponsor tournament winner was a team from the City of Olean. Who will have the bragging rights this year?
The Visions Hotel FunFest will also include the Olean Family YMCA inflatables (free on Friday), food concessions, the referee meeting, and basketball. All courts (besides the ones used for the Sponsors Tournament) will be open - bring your basketball down and your game!
Also, team registration will take place from 4 - 7 PM at the former Rex Appliances inside the Olean Center Mall. The Gus Macker Olean committee encourages all local players to register Friday. Saturday registration continues inside the mall from 7 AM - Noon.
OPENING CEREMONIES -- Saturday, August 20, ceremonies will take place at the top men’s court featuring the national anthem sung by Kirk & Kellen Gilbert and the blessings of the basketballs by the Sr. Regina Aman of St. Mary of the Angels Church. Also, Olean General Hospital’s Tim Finan will be on hand and will try and make the official DO-OR-DIE Shot. Once the shot is made, the Gus Macker will begin! The Olean-Bradford YMCA will be sponsoring a KidZone both days with inflatables.
DREAM COURT -- The Dream Court will return for its fourth year appearance at the Olean Macker. The Dream Court is a specially-designed red, white and blue All-American themed court with a synthetic court surface, like the Top Men’s and Women’s Courts. Color commentators announce games on the Dream Court. Teams are selected at random to play on the court.
SPECIAL CONTESTS--Gus Macker players will participate in a Three Point Shot Competition and the US Marines Slam Dunk Competition with the rounds taking place Saturday around 6 PM on the Top Men’s Court.
The Rotary Club of Olean will be hosting a free throw contest Saturday from 10 AM – 5 PM. The $5 entry fee will get you entered into the contest to win prizes. This contest is open to the public.
The tournament is proud to recognize three area companies, Park Centre Development, CUTCO/Ka-Bar Visitors Center, and the Kinley Corporation, who have stepped up and become the Charter Members of the Tournament.
