Where can you find everything you need all under one roof that can turn your home dreams into a reality? The Greater Olean Area Home Show, presented by Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce and its 43 Corporate Sponsors, is your all-access pass to home specialists offering all the expert advice; solutions and inspiration for whatever home project you have planned this year. The show will be held April 13-15, 2012.
Vendor booths are now available for the annual home show, held at the William O. Smith Recreation Center in Olean. At least eighty of the area’s leading businesses are expected to exhibit their wares and services at the upcoming show. The Home Show is a unique marketplace to shop, compare and save on a total selection of home-related products and services for building, remodeling, gardening and decorating. The show gives you more experts, vendors, companies in one place at one time than any other opportunity in our area. Its time to improve the livability and value of your home, and the home show is here to help
The show dates and times are April 13, 5 PM to 9 PM, April 14, 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday, April 15, 10 AM to 4 PM. Nancy Morgan, the Chamber’s Membership Coordinator, said, “The Greater Olean Home Show is three days with home improvement, leisure and lifestyle vendors on hand.” Exhibitor space is limited; area businesses are encouraged to make booth reservations as soon as possible. GOACC members will receive discount booth space. SOROKES SECOND TERM GOACC PRESIDENT
The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has announced its slate of officers for the 2012 year: President, Larry Sorokes, St. Bonaventure University; Vice-President, Vic Vena, Vic Vena Pharmacy; Secretary, Colleen Taggerty, Olean City School District; and Treasurer, Eric Garvin, Community Bank, NA. New to the Board for the 2012 term include: Ruth Reisner, Trans Am Ambulance Services; Louis “Ledgie” DeRose, Mazza Mechanical Services; and John Gerringer, Besecker & Coss Appliances and Services.
Mr. Sorokes stated, “It’s an honor to continue in a leadership role with GOACC. The Chamber staff is one of the most dedicated and hard-working teams I have ever worked with, and we have a Board of Directors that is committed to making our area successful, business-friendly, and a model for other small communities. We know that we face substantial challenges to maintain and grow our community as a vibrant, progressive, and attractive location for both businesses and families to thrive. Our first priority this year is the development of a new strategic plan that will identify the resources, partnerships, and actions necessary to gain significant achievement in economic development, quality-of-life concerns, and vitality for our member businesses.” Mr. Sorokes has been serving the GOACC in many capacities: Board Member in the late 90s and early 2000s and Board President in 2005-2006, 2011 years.
Mr. Sorokes would like to thank the following individuals who stepped down from the Chamber Board in 2011 and for their service to GOACC: Ted Branch, Bob Chambers, and Michelle Caya. Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, located at 120 North Union Street in downtown Olean, has been the leading business organization in the greater Olean area since 1906. Outdoor Show Highlights Exhibitors, Manufacturers & Experts
Whether coming off the big game season, enjoying winter sports, gearing up for spring fishing or looking to spend a fun day with family, everyone will enjoy the 3rd annual Greater Olean Area Outdoor & Rec Sports Show. It brings the whole of great outdoors under one roof! The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Sports Show at the Daniel Carter Events Center, 2383 West Five Mile Road Extension in Allegany (on exit 24 ramp off I-86), Saturday, January 28, 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday, January 29, 10 AM to 4 PM.
CUTCO Cutlery Corporation, Ka-Bar Knives, Ron’s Gun Shop, Hertz at Mallery’s, Premo Limo, Microtel Inn & Suites of Olean and AmazingAerialPhotos.com have signed on as show sponsors. As more individuals and families travel shorter distances from home and take shorter vacations or mini-vacations, the Rec / Sports Show will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities close to home. Exhibits will include camping, paddle sports, hiking, cycling, all-terrain vehicles, hunting, snow and water-skiing, snowmobiling, bird watching, fishing, and more!

Roger Raglin will appear both days of the show. Roger owns and operates BKS productions and also produces the extremely popular television show “Roger Raglin Outdoors.” Roger makes northeastern Oklahoma his home and lives near Coweta. With nearly 60 full featured hunting DVD's on the market, BKS Productions represents one of the largest active video production companies in America. BKS tapes are distributed by every major outlet including, Bass Pro, Wal-Mart, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, Dick's Sporting, Academy, Shields, to name a few. It is also impossible to walk into any rental outlet that carries hunting videos and NOT find Roger's tapes. In fact, ask the clerk in attendance whose tapes are the most popular and invariably more times than not their response will be, "Roger Raglin's BKS Tapes."
The formula for Roger's success is quite simple - good wholesome entertainment that the entire family can watch; ethical and safe hunting practices; clean kill scenes; broadcast quality camera work; top professional production value; and perhaps most importantly there is Roger himself.
Roger hosts and produces his own television show, “Roger Raglin Outdoors,” seen in the 3rd and 4th quarters on Outdoor Channel. One of the most popular shows on that network, “Roger Raglin Outdoors” continues to air with high ratings and to the praises of the viewing audience; including fan favorite nominations. His show is sponsored by some of the strongest and most respected companies in the hunting industry.
Olean General Hospital is a new vendor to the show and they will spotlight sports medicine and an Ask the Doc session. Mohaned Al-Humadi, M.D. who will be the featured presenter, is fellowship trained in sports medicine and specializes in advanced arthroscopic treatment for shoulders, knees and hips, comprehensive shoulder and knee surgery, as well as minimally invasive procedures. Air Ivanhoe and The Ivanhoe River Inn, also will be attending the show. They offer the best in fly-in fishing on remote Northern Ontario Lakes for Walleye, Northern Pike, Perch, Trout and Bass in remote Outpost cabins. The Ivanhoe River Inn located on Ivanhoe Lake is a full service lodge and one of Northern Ontario's largest vertical log fishing lodges.

Sports Show Raffle -- The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a raffle for their Greater Olean Area Outdoor and Recreation Sports Show. The raffle includes a chance to win a chance to win one of 3 prizes: GRAND PRIZE - 18 pc Cutco Cutlery Corp. Cutlery Set (Retail Value $1,034); 2nd PRIZE - Savage M111FCXP3, 30-06 Caliber, with a 3-9 X 40 Bushnell Scope, Synthetic Stock, detachable magazine, and hard case (Retail Value $575); and 3rd PRIZE - 2 Person Charter on Lake Erie 2012 from Reel Action Sportfishing, (Retail Value $300). Tickets are $5 or five for $20 with a limit of 500 tickets. The drawing will be held January 29. Get On the Bus to Portville and Now Salamanca! Affordable public transportation is again available between Salamanca and Olean three times daily. The Seneca Nation of Indians Tribal Council announced the agreement to start a six month trial operation of utilizing public transportation for travel in the community and surrounding area. The Salamanca service will be provided by First Transit, Inc., the operator of OATS, the Olean Area Transit System. The trial service began November 1st and operates Monday through Saturday, except holidays, and will be based in Olean. Current plans are for one morning and one afternoon round trip from Olean to Salamanca and back during daytime hours and one round trip.
The cost for each passenger is $1.00 for an adult one-way fare to ride the bus within either the City of Olean or Salamanca. The cost for passengers traveling from either Olean to Salamanca or any stop in between is $2.00. Seniors and disable individuals may ride for one-half of the adult fare. Children under 12 years of age ride for free but must be accompanied by an adult. The bus schedule for the OATS Olean to Portville and to Salamanca service is available on the City of Olean website, www.cityofolean.org.
Chamber Six-Week Seminar Series
GOACC’s membership committee began hosting seminars every six weeks in September. Each seminar will feature a topic of concern to our membership. They will be held at the Chamber office at no cost for Chamber members. Matt Kahm, GOACC Member Committee Chair stated, “Our members are looking to us for information – what better way than to bring them to the Chamber office and educate them.”
FEBRUARY 28 – LEADERSHIP SKILLS, TIME: Noon -- No matter the size of your organization, leadership skills are necessary to drive your business forward. During this session, we will discuss the different leadership styles used when developing individuals. As a leader, different amounts of direction and support are required depending on the competence level of each individual on your team. Choosing the proper leadership style to give direction and support can many times be the difference between success and failure. APRIL 3 – MARKETING ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET, TIME: 8 AM -- While cutting promotional activity may appear to be an inevitable consequence and an unfortunate choice that has to be made, the truth is that any business can be effectively marketed on a limited, “downsized” budget. PRESENTER-- TBA

GREATER OLEAN CHAMBER MEMBERS MAKE THE NEWS ---- A FREE member benefit to announce awards, personnel changes, merchandise changes, etc. Only details sent directly to the Chamber office will be included.
•Environmental Award -- Cooper Power Systems, Olean, has received the Silver Environmental Award from Cooper Industries for the evolution distribution-class surge arrester product line. This line reduces power loss during power transmission by more than 90 percent over existing arresters. Cooper Power Systems Olean chose to donate the award monies to help fund the environmental programs at the Portville, Olean and Allegany-Limestone high schools.
•Mallery’s Upgrades -- John Mallery strives to make improvements to Mallery’s Auto Body, Inc., in order to better serve his customers. That dedication earned him recognition in the December 2011 issue of FenderBender, monthly trade magazine for the automobile repair industry.
•American Cancer Society -- Crystal Page was the Outreach Coordinator in the Southern Tier for Mercy Flight for 3 years but has now accepted a position with the American Cancer Society as the Director of Special Events in Cattaraugus County. •New Business / New Member -- Optometrist Dr. Tracy Ludden assumed ownership of Morgan Optical on December 1 and has changed the company logo and name to Enchanted Mountain Eyecare. She also plans to upgrade the 3,000 square-foot facility located at 912 West State Street in Olean while continuing to operate the office at 8 Chestnut Street in Bradford, Pennsylvania. •Member Helping Member -- Rick Bokman Buick, GMC, Cadillac donated $2,500 to the Olean Food Pantry. This assistance will help the pantry and its mission of providing food for area families in need.
•Electric Bills to Fall in 2012 for National Grid Customers -- Electric bills will be going down in 2012 for the vast majority of National Grid customers in upstate New York following a decision from the New York Public Service Commission (PSC). The typical residential customer bill will be 6 percent lower overall, assuming equal usage.
Small to mid-sized commercial accounts would see overall bill reductions ranging from 4 to 11 percent. Large commercial and industrial accounts would see total bills drop by as much as 13 to 23 percent, depending on type of account. The changes authorized by the PSC take effect January 1st. This decision is part of National Grid’s on-going efforts to keep rates stable, while continuing to allow for the investment needed in upstate New York’s electricity networks.
•LEADERSHIP CATTARAUGUS SEEKS APPLICANTS -- Leadership Cattaraugus, which has developed some of the highest profile business and civic citizens in the county, is accepting applications for its class of 2012. Leadership Cattaraugus was established in November 2003 as a joint effort of Jamestown Community College (Cattaraugus County Campus), The ReHabilitation Center, Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce and St. Bonaventure University.
Applications for the 2012 program, which will begin in March, are now being accepted. All applicants will be screened by a Selection Committee and those chosen will be notified in February. The criteria include leadership potential, commitment to service, and a clear desire to contribute to the county’s well-being. Tuition for the 10-month program is $1,200; some tuition assistance is available to qualified participants.
